10 Simple Things
Quickly quiet the negativity and give your voice some love with this one great trick the next time you practice.
Welcome to my blog! I’m Jill – and whether you’re new to Sing With Jill, or you’ve been following me for a while, I wanted to share a little bit about me and my story.
Let me start by saying this: it hasn’t always been easy! If you’ve been singing for a while or you’re just starting out; if you sing for pleasure or as your profession, then you can probably relate. I’m about to get very honest and vulnerable here so hold on to your hats…
The truth is, music has shaped me and moved me along on a path that at times I questioned. Since music isn’t the most common career path, it was looked at as a hobby by those around me, not as a serious job. And that was really hard. Trying to believe in myself, follow my instincts and walk into the unknown when the messaging surrounding me was not encouraging was A BIG CHALLENGE.
Add to that the fact that I’ve always been bit off-side (and that’s OK! ). My confidence and extraverted vibe is sometimes ‘a show’ just to fit in. I’ve always felt different. Growing up, I had no friends interested in the Arts. I went to a very sports-oriented high school. Even when I graduated and went into Theatre School, my talents were not nurtured. It was a grind, but I found my way.
And here’s the wonderful thing:
At the end of the day, whether it was a ‘good’ one or a ‘bad’ one, I ALWAYS found joy and peace in singing. To this day, I’m able to ground myself and come back to joy with my voice. This is why I’m so passionate about singing and sharing my voice.
Singing is how I heal.
It’s how I communicate, it’s how I find the will on hard days to put on a happy face and just keep on truckin’. And it’s what motivates my work with students. I find joy in supporting people on their vocal journeys and sharing in their experiences. The highs and lows and everything in between!
So why am I telling you all this??? Because I want you to know you’re not alone in your journey to find your voice and discover the sheer joy of singing – or whatever brings you into a space where you feel the most peace and contentment within yourself. We ALL deserve that. And I wish that for YOU and I’m right here with you!
